Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton picks up an honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LLD) at Queen’s University Belfast for her exceptional public service in the USA and globally, and for her outstanding contribution to peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. Hillary Clinton addressed the audience of staff and students from the university at the honorary graduation ceremony and urged the politicians of Northern Ireland to put their differences aside and come together because "Northern Ireland has been a symbol to people of democracy."
Secretary Clinton also spoke about her first visit to Northern Ireland in 1995 in the position of First Lady with Bill Clinton and shared her nostalgic experiences regarding place it was then and its remarkable spectacular progress since then.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, the President and Vice Chancellor of Queen’s, Professor Ian Greer said “We are delighted to award an honorary degree to Hillary Rodham Clinton. The former US Secretary of State is international recognised public servant and has shown great interest in developing strong links with Queen’s and Northern Ireland.”
Professor Adrienne Scullion, Pro-Vice Chancellor for the faculty of arts, humanities and social sciences at Queen’s announced a new scholarship “The Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Peace and Reconciliation” and a new fellowship “The Hillary Rodham Clinton Early Career Fellowship” honouring her long commitment to peace and reconciliation.
